MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry‘s comments caused some heartburn this week when she expressed a sentiment all-too-common among people of a certain mindset – that a family’s natural stewardship for their children might stand in the way of certain government and societal goals. In a recorded promo piece she said, “We haven’t had a very collective notion of these are our children. So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families and recognize that kids belong to whole communities.”
On March 1st of this year, Senator Mark Madsen shared comments on the senate floor that have stuck with many of us. I think they offer an appropriately stark contrast with Ms. Harris-Perry’s beliefs and are worth hearing again.
