Federal Court Defendant Shot by U.S. Marshal After Lunging at a Witness

A BIZARRE INCIDENT MONDAY MORNING, INTERRUPTED THE FIRST TRIAL THAT WAS EVER TO BE HELD, IN SALT LAKE'S NEW FEDERAL COURTHOUSE, AT 4TH SOUTH AND WEST TEMPLE.

AN ALLEGED TONGAN CRIPS GANG MEMBER, SIALE ANGILAU, 25, IS ACCUSED OF SHOOTING TWO DEPUTY U-S MARSHALS, IN 2007.

BUT FBI ASSISTANT SPECIAL AGENT MARK DRESSEN SAYS, AS A WITNESS BEGAN TO TESTIFY AGAINST HIM, THE DEFENDANT GRAPPED A PEN... LUNGED TOWARD THE WITNESS STAND... AND WAS SHOT IN THE CHEST, BY A U-S MARSHAL, MULTIPLE TIMES.

THE WITNESS WAS UNINJURED.

AUTHORITIES WEREN'T SAYING WHAT THE DEFENDANT'S CURRENT CONDITION WAS, MONDAY AFTERNOON.

WITNESSES SAY HE WAS CONSCIOUS, AS HE WAS WHEELED OUT OF THE COURTHOUSE ON A STRECHER.

AUTHORITIES SAY THE INCIDENT OCCURRED IN JUDGE TENA CAMPBELL'S COURTROOM.

THE NEW COURTHOUSE -- WHICH OPENED JUST A WEEK AGO -- REMAINED ON LOCKDOWN, INTO THE AFTERNOON.
